After starting in horticulture as a plantsman over 25 years ago it has been a constant joy to be in a position to be able to add beauty to the gardens and landscapes in which I have worked. I studied at Askham Bryan College in York, gaining distinctions in Horticulture and Landscape management at HND and Bsc level, but have not stopped learning since.

Having spent 5 years running my own garden design business I became the Head Gardener of the botanically significant Trevarno Estate until its unfortunate closure. Happy I left some considerable legacy planting of Chinese magnolias and the odd dragon!

Recently I have managed the restoration and development of the derelict 18 acre gardens at Killiganoon Manor.

With a wealth of experience I am now pleased to join the team at Muddy Wellies where I will endeavour to continue to share my knowledge and further add to the beauty of the Cornish landscape. If you don't find me in a garden, my head will be in a book or with my hands on my bass guitar playing in a reggae band.

Ten years ago I returned from a trip to Mexico enthused about plants and keen to be a gardener. I started out volunteering for the National Trust and getting my first RHS qualifications and moved on to training at Kew Royal Botanic Gardens. I moved to Cornwall to work in the Eden Project biomes, but after a couple of years I missed being out in the fresh air and joined Muddy Wellies as a Team Leader. I love Mediterranean plants and succulents, so working in Cornwall is ideal!

I started my horticultural journey completing a C&G at Brinsbury college in Sussex giving me a taste for landscape gardening. I started working for world renowned water garden expert Anthony Archer - Wills who ignited my passion for landscape construction whether a large scale theme park or a small back garden. I took a year out to complete my NCH at Merrist Wood in Surrey before rejoining Anthony. I have been involved in the horticultural industry throughout my working life and have had the pleasure in passing on my knowledge whilst teaching at college level and for HMP services. Whilst working for HMP services we encouraged the inmates to take up new skills culminating in a 1st and best in show for a small garden at national garden show Bath and West showground.
Along with my young family I have moved to Cornwall to be closer to family. I have the pleasure in joining the team at Muddy Wellies Gardens where look forward to utilising and sharing my skills as a Hard Landscaper and team leader.

My interest in horticulture and botany is an extension of an all round fascination for nature in general. With a love of wildflowers and plants, my home near the Lizzard with its particular geology and climate, is a great place from which to indulge that passion. Having studied wildlife film making at university, I occasionally work for BBC natural history unit on programs like Springwatch and so am possibly the best member of the team to help identify the wildlife in your garden. But, knowing we all have a passion for nature at Muddy Wellies Gardens, our gentle and wildlife friendly approach to gardening is one of many things I enjoy about working here.

After first working as a seasonal gardener in Falmouth in 2013 I moved to London to better my horticultural knowledge and receive formal training and qualifications.

I was fortunate to be accepted onto the Royal Parks Apprenticeship scheme based at Bushy and Richmond Park where I received Level 2 and 3 Diplomas in Work Based Horticulture, RHS Level 2 Qualifications and other practical certificates working in truly spectacular gardens and open parkland.

After my apprenticeship I worked for a landscaping company in West London before relocating to Cornwall, where my passion for horticulture first developed. Here i worked for Wheelbarrow gardening in Fowey before joining the Muddy Wellies Gardens team.

I am a passionate, hardworking Gardener with a love for all aspects of horticulture, large shrubs in particular and I look forward to bringing my knowledge and experience of working in award winning parks and gardens to Muddy Wellies Gardens.

Outside of work you will find me somewhere on the coast bodyboarding or walking and enjoying the beautiful Cornish scenery.

Most people in Horticulture always attribute someone to being their inspiration, giving them the gardening ‘bug’. I can't say that I ever did. As a small boy, I was fascinated by anything living and growing. While my dad would take my brother to model racing and go karting, I’d beg to go to a garden centre, much to his dismay! I’ve just always felt an affinity to plants and the natural world. Unfortunately, my passion was never really channelled and I steered away form horticulture until a few years ago.

After spending 4 years being a gardener all the while completing my HND in Garden and Landscape design at Eden Project Learning and the RHS Level 2 in Practical Horticulture at Duchy college. I’m really excited to be able to start building some beautiful gardens with the rest of the team at Muddy Wellies Gardens.

If you want a funny story, ask me about ‘Jibby’…

I am a very keen gardener and have been for a number of years. I enjoy working outdoors and making a garden look its best. I like having a hands on role and get satisfaction from seeing a garden develop and bloom.

I enjoy working at Muddy Wellies Gardens as there is always the opportunity to learn something new and to improve my skill set, each day brings a different challenge. Along side this i am studding towards my level 2 horticulture qualifications at Duchy college.

I am dedicated to my work and enjoy researching garden plants and shrubs in my spare time.

When I am not in the garden you will find me on the water kayaking or fishing!

A few words from...

Sylvia Geach, Falmouth

I contacted Muddy Wellies Gardening Services for help with the overgrown jungle that was my back garden. Helen and her team could not have been more helpful. The whole design process was so enjoyable and I now have an oasis in the garden. It is so much more than I could have imagined.
