Samantha Finneran

Administration and Customer services

BA (Hons) Garden Design
AAT Accountancy L2 & L3 Dip. AAT

After enjoying a year of Art school and finding my interests were heading towards plants indoors and out, I went on to complete a degree in Garden Design at University in Falmouth in 2009. I love watching plants flourish from seeds to maturity and planning for the relationships they have with each other and the ecosystem they create - short to tall, deep rooted to shallow, nitrogen fixers, plants for pollinators and edibles. I have had some time out raising two children, watching them get muddy fingers (and toes) in the garden at home and have been studying AAT Accounting at college. I am excited to be working with Muddy Wellies on the admin team where I can bring together three passions of mine - gardens, people and paperwork!

Stewart Watson

Garden Designer and Landscaper

HND Garden & Landscape Design
RHS Level 2 Dip. Hort.

Most people in Horticulture always attribute someone as being their inspiration to getting the gardening ‘bug’. I cant say that I ever did. As a small boy, I was fascinated by anything living and growing. While my dad would take my brother to model racing and go karting, I’d beg to go to a garden center, much to his dismay! I’ve just always felt an affinity to plants and the natural world.
I've been a gardener since 2016. In that time I have completed an HND in Garden and Landscape design at Eden Project Learning and the RHS Level 2 in Practical Horticulture at Duchy college. Now I’m really excited to be able to be designing and building some beautiful gardens with the rest of the Muddy Wellies Gardens team.

Tom Mallet

Skilled Landscaper

NVQ Level 1 & 2 Carpentry & Construction

Originally from Essex, I moved to Cornwall in 2020. I've always loved being outdoors from the very beginning, helping parents out in the garden, and my very 1st paid job at 16, a Sunday job mowing the lawn, strimming, hedge cutting, and tree pruning, for my uncles large wild garden, consisting of 4 lawns (2 large) on different levels, with wild areas, a stream and a long 70m driveway, it was always a joy to just lose myself for a few hours every week.

At a young age I also had a love for making things. This progressed into me getting my carpentry qualifications, years later, along side carpentry I got into groundworks, luckily the department I worked for specialised in 'small works' which amongst other things included driveways, patios, paving, decking, lawns and gardens. After that I went to work for a golf course as builder and groundworker, working with the greenkeepers I learnt a lot about, and took a great interest, in lawn care.

I am a qualified digger driver, with well over 10yrs experience, also qualified for dumpers, tractor and trailer, and chainsaws.

My skills definitely lay in the hard landscaping side of things, transforming a tired garden into a beautiful and useable space is always a great thing. And who doesn't love a before and after photo for memories!
But even with most my knowledge being with hard landscaping I look forward to increasing my knowledge of soft landscaping whilst working for Muddy Wellies Gardens.

When not at work, I enjoy making things, I'm always looking for a project in the house or garden. And now I'm down this part of the country I'm really looking forward to exploring beaches, coves, caves and rocks. I'm also quite a film buff.

Max Harvey

Skilled Landscaper

City & Guilds Level 2 Dip. Construction

From a very early age I have had a passion for wildlife and the great outdoors. When I left school I went on to study masonry, where I found my passion for building and the sense of satisfaction it would bring after completing a project. I am a hard working individual who enjoys nothing more than getting stuck into a project, taking great appreciation in my work and always striving for the best result.

Through previous employment I have done a lot of garden maintenance and landscaping over the years.I am excited to be joining the Muddy Wellies Gardens team, and looking forward to  being able to help people to achive their dream gardens.

When I'm not busy working you can find me exploring the beauty of Cornwall with my many dogs.

Oscar Neves

Landscaping Assistant

Student: Eden Project BSc Garden and Landscape Design

My love for landscaping began whilst working on a job at Trebarwith strand, renovating an old pig house into a beautiful studio with outstanding views. A eureka moment happened, have I finally found my passion and career path?  I wanted to become a landscape architect but had no idea that's what it was called yet.

Then I started working as a laborer for a traditional Cornish stone mason/carpenter/farmer and picked up the base level building ability after being trained for a year on all things masonry and carpentry. My journey with landscaping progressed as I moved back to my home town in Cheshire. Started working under a master craftsman and that’s when Landscaping became my life. 2 years of full time employment and my landscaping abilities started to emerge such as: laying patios, stone walling, fencing. I enrolled in an apprenticeship at Reaseheath college studying Horticulture, however I felt that this apprenticeship did not challenge me enough. So I enrolled at the inspiring Eden Project; to study BSc Garden and Landscape Design. I am now a full time student studying Horticulture, finally pursuing my passion. I am looking forward to working with Muddy Wellies Gardens as this will allow me to maintain and improve what skills I have already acquired.

I’m an  active and outdoorsy person, always needing something to keep me occupied. When not on site I enjoy a number of things like: downhill biking, skating, skiing, adventuring, rugby, going out with friends to music events and ending a beautiful day to a nice pint down the local.

Toby Dawson

Team Leader

HND Hort, BSc Hort

After starting in horticulture as a plantsman over 25 years ago it has been a constant joy to be in a position to be able to add beauty to the gardens and landscapes in which I have worked. I studied at Askham Bryan College in York, gaining distinctions in Horticulture and Landscape management at HND and Bsc level, but have not stopped learning since.

Having spent 5 years running my own garden design business I became the Head Gardener of the botanically significant Trevarno Estate until its unfortunate closure. Happy I left some considerable legacy planting of Chinese magnolias and the odd dragon!

Recently I have managed the restoration and development of the derelict 18 acre gardens at Killiganoon Manor.

With a wealth of experience I am now pleased to join the team at Muddy Wellies where I will endeavour to continue to share my knowledge and further add to the beauty of the Cornish landscape. If you don't find me in a garden, my head will be in a book or with my hands on my bass guitar playing in a reggae band.

Oliver Harper

Assistant Team Leader

Dip. Hort
RHS level 2 Dip. Hort

After first working as a seasonal gardener in Falmouth in 2013 I moved to London to better my horticultural knowledge and receive formal training and qualifications.

I was fortunate to be accepted onto the Royal Parks Apprenticeship scheme based at Bushy and Richmond Park where I received Level 2 and 3 Diplomas in Work Based Horticulture, RHS Level 2 Qualifications and other practical certificates working in truly spectacular gardens and open parkland.

After my apprenticeship I worked for a landscaping company in West London before relocating to Cornwall, where my passion for horticulture first developed. Here i worked for Wheelbarrow gardening in Fowey before joining the Muddy Wellies Gardens team.

I am a passionate, hardworking Gardener with a love for all aspects of horticulture, large shrubs in particular and I look forward to bringing my knowledge and experience of working in award winning parks and gardens to Muddy Wellies Gardens.

Outside of work you will find me somewhere on the coast bodyboarding or walking and enjoying the beautiful Cornish scenery.

I am a very keen gardener and have been for a number of years. I enjoy working outdoors and making a garden look its best. I like having a hands on role and get satisfaction from seeing a garden develop and bloom.

I enjoy working at Muddy Wellies Gardens as there is always the opportunity to learn something new and to improve my skill set, each day brings a different challenge. Along side this i am studding towards my level 2 horticulture qualifications at Duchy college.

I am dedicated to my work and enjoy researching garden plants and shrubs in my spare time.

When I am not in the garden you will find me on the water kayaking or fishing!

Originally from Herefordshire I have long been passionate about horticulture and working in the outdoors. When I moved to Cornwall I knew that I wanted to gain further experience, skills and knowledge in the area. In the following 2 years I gained an RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture, and an RHS Level 3 qualification in Practical Horticulture. Being part of the team at Muddy Wellies has been a priviledge as it has allowed me to work in some beautiful gardens alongside very talented and passionate professionals.

Lee Besford

Gardener & Horticulturalist

BTEC Level 2 Dip. Hort
BTEC Level 3 Dip. Hort

Having always enjoyed the outdoors and nature I’ve gradually turned my hobby and passion for horticulture into a career. Switching profession later in life I then pursued this through college to attain various qualifications alongside volunteering in support groups for the less able. I’m a firm believer in the therapeutic qualities of nature and enabling everyone to enjoy and appreciate plants and gardens.

I enjoy contributing towards the complete service Muddy Wellies Gardens provide. Working alongside clients to help nurture and maximise their garden’s potential, while advising and maintaining these to the best possible standard all year round. Being part of such a great team there’s always something or someone to learn from, and every day brings a new experience.

If I’m not in the garden I’ll be found somewhere outside, pursuing my love of photography, running or hiking.

Sarah Woollett

Gardening Assistant

BA (hons) Art & Costume Design

As a late bloomer to the gardening world, I found my passion for garden maintenance working a gardening summer season, in the stunning landscapes of BC, Canada. Here I learnt many professional horticultural practices and got my hands dirty nurturing plants and maintaining luxury gardens. During 2021 I will be enrolling on a certified course to further my knowledge of plants and back up my horticultural skills. I am excited about joining the talented Muddy Wellies Gardens team, gaining invaluable knowledge and cultivating green spaces, so that people can enjoy the huge benefits the outdoors offers! When I’m not at work you can find me exploring the coast and getting in the surf!.

A few words from...

Sylvia Geach, Falmouth

I contacted Muddy Wellies Gardening Services for help with the overgrown jungle that was my back garden. Helen and her team could not have been more helpful. The whole design process was so enjoyable and I now have an oasis in the garden. It is so much more than I could have imagined.
